---- — LONDONDERRY — All is well at Londonderry Middle School.
For the past five years, students and staff at the school have partnered for a full day of wellness and good health.
This year’s Wellness Day was held Sept. 11 and brought out guest speakers, special activities, healthy snacks and fun challenges, all in the name of staying fit.
School physical education teacher Suzan Rowe said the entire school participates.
“Every team is incorporated,” she said.
Rowe said the school has a Wellness Committee in place that works hard on maintaining healthy activities and initiatives throughout the school year.
The good health mission goes hand in hand with national efforts to make schools healthier with their lunch menus and their levels of exercise and movement during the day.
Many teachers and staff members volunteered to teach some of the special classes and activities throughout the day like kick-boxing, Zumba, yoga, Latin dancing and other exercises.
The entire 1,200-plus student body wore special shirts with team logos printed on the back.
Eighth-grader Kaleah Cardinal said she was enjoying the day.
“We get to do activities like karate and walking around outside,” she said.
Ricky Perry, another eighth-grader, was working with classmates on analyzing foods and what nutrition level certain things had — some of the favorites of many students.
“We watched the movie ‘Supersize Me’ about McDonald’s,” he said.
Ricky said it was fun to count how many calories were in some of those popular foods.
Other special visitors during Wellness Day include “speed painter” Rob Surette, who visits many schools in the area to give his take on “Hero Art” and shows his painting talents by whipping up massive portraits of some of the world’s most famous people in mere minutes.
Wellness Day is one of many things the committee sponsors throughout the year. Other activities include an annual walk/run event in October, intramural tennis, golf, snowshoeing and volleyball.
Support for the activities comes in part from the committee’s annual Wellness Auction, this year set for Dec. 5.
