Londonderry gas station to get upgrades

LONDONDERRY —An aging gas station will get a new life.

Town officials heard early conceptual plans on a plan to upgrade the Global gas station at 1 Hampton Drive. The plan includes demolishing and relocating the existing convenience store to include a drive-through doughnut shop and installing new fuel dispensers.

Alliance Energy Corporation is the applicant and owner. Company representatives told the Planning Board it was time for an upgrade at the site off Route 102.

“That gas station has been there a long time,” attorney and plan spokesman Jim Bianco said. “Our clients think it’s a little tired. We want to make it safer, make it more attractive.”

The station currently sits on a 1-acre lot. The area is a busy one, right off Route 102.

Underground fuel tanks would be replaced with state-of-the-art fiberglass tanks. The existing tanks are aging, installed in the early 1990s. They usually have about a 30-year life expectancy.

The plan is in its very earliest stages, Bianco said, and he was hoping to get feedback from planning officials before moving forward.

The proposal also must go before the town’s Heritage Commission.

Members of that board will hear the plan details, then study any architectural or landscaping details to keep within the town’s historical integrity.

Art Rugg is chairman of both the Planning Board and Heritage Commission. He said it’s important for the historical group to get involved early on to see what’s planned for properties around town.

“I think you’ll hear a lot of ideas from the Heritage Commission,” Rugg said.

Planning Board member Mary Soares said she hoped the new plan might include some sort of cupola-style design.

“We want to have an attractive view for people driving by,” she said.

But, Soares said, she liked the overall plan.
