Londonderry Rotarians shop to help others

LONDONDERRY — Local Rotarians went on a shopping spree to help others.

Every year at the holidays, Londonderry Rotary Club members head out to local stores to shop for a good cause, something they have been doing for about 20 years.

This year, Rotarians headed to the Derry Walmart with wish lists in hand to shop for specific items to help about 100 people.

The club receives the information about families and individuals in need through St. Jude’s and St. Mark’s parishes. This year, they will spend upward of $3,000 for the holiday mission.

All information remains confidential.

The need continues to grow each year.

“This is the most names we’ve had in years,” 22-year Rotarian Faye Sell said.

She said the annual shopping trip helps so many and it’s a tradition the members look forward to each year.

On the wish lists this year were mostly clothing, shoes, boots and warm coats. The club tends to steer clear of the toy collections and leave that up to other holiday campaigns like Toys for Tots.

The focus this year was on items that may be needed the most to stay warm this winter.

Sell said being part of the Rotary and helping those in need enjoy the holiday is a big part of the Rotary’s annual mission of community service.

“We are really about helping a family have a nice Christmas,” she said.
