SPECTATOR

Derry News

---- — The wave continues

The memory of the “waving man” lives.

Months after Derry resident Robert Young died in a tragic accident, his waving action continues with a special touch on the season for those who remembered his daily waves from his home on Route 102.

A life-sized silhouette sits in a chair at Young’s home and is waving to passing cars. In the spirit of the holidays, Young’s likeness is now sporting a bright red scarf and Santa Claus hat.

All worked up

The large pickup truck’s license said it all.

The vanity plate reads “WRKD4IT.”

The driver may have saved for a long time to earn his dream vehicle and now wants to let everyone know his hard work paid off in a big way.

Stolen spuds

During a visit to Derry Village Elementary School, Derry state Rep. John O’Connor told fourth-graders he wanted to make the potato New Hampshire’s state vegetable. Of course, Idaho already named the mighty potato its own state vegetable.

“That’s only because they stole the potato from us,” O’Connor said.

Derry is known in many historic circles as the land where the first North American potato grew. O’Connor is working to make the potato official as the state’s official vegetable.

Rocky returns

An annoying and possibly unstable squirrel returned, once again, recently to a home on King Henry Drive, a place it has visited before and involving police action.

This time a pest control company came to the rescue.

The Londonderry police dispatcher fielded another call about the rascally rodent last week.

“Squirrel in house again,” the log read. “Can’t hear it or see it, but came home to find his fireplace screen knocked down.”

It wasn’t Santa paying an early visit. The squirrel was cornered inside the home.

Squeaky clean

A trip to Platinum Car Wash on Garden Lane took a little longer for one man last week.

Police fielded a call from the man who was stuck inside because the automatic door wouldn’t open.

Londonderry sent a fire engine to the scene and the man was freed.
