Coup d’état expected from Derry council

To the editor:

Choo, choo. Did anyone else hear the train rolling up the old rail trail and directly into the Derry Municipal Center a couple Tuesdays ago? That was the Town Council Express railroading one of the most absurd decisions they’ve made to date (and there have been many) and shoving it right down our throats.

Opting not to hire an outside search firm to impartially evaluate possible town administrator candidates is, in my opinion, reckless, irresponsible and fraught with the potential for bias, nepotism, cronyism and back-door dealings.

I found it amusing that the new council chairman, obsessed with public input, suddenly didn’t want to hear what the community thought of this ill-advised scheme.

I was also surprised that no alumni from the Fairbanks School for Conspiracy Fabrication bolted to the dais in opposition of this misguided initiative. But, then I realized that most were already on the short list for the vacancy.

Observing Mr. Osborne and Mr. Dimmock “cramming for the exam” while dining together in a remote corner of T-Bones the night before the last council meeting only added to my fears for preconception … or were they just celebrating St. Patrick’s Day together? Yeah, that’s it. They might want to hold such meetings in private in the future so that the citizens of the town can continue to delude themselves into thinking that each and every councilor is master of their own convictions.

To think that the council majority, distinguished for its blaring dysfunction of late, could ever possibly conduct an effective, thorough, professional, ethical and unbiased executive search is simply just another example of that dysfunction.

Citing the cost of hiring a professional search firm as the reason for not using one is just a smokescreen, folks, and I hope the citizens of Derry are as incensed as I am about the coup d’état that is about to occur. We need to derail this train. If you’re “mad as hell and not going to take it anymore,” contact me at takebackderry@gmail.com.
