Londonderry sex offender suspected in break-in

WINDHAM — A registered sex offender from Londonderry was caught breaking into a house and tried to hide from police after he was spotted, police said.

Steven Bonacorsi, 40, of 47 Season Lane, was arrested at 6 Londonderry Road after a neighbor noticed him in the house around 9:35 p.m. Saturday.

"We had a neighbor who happened to see a light come on in the house and knew the people who lived there were not at home at the time," police Chief Gerald Lewis said. "Once the officers arrived, (Bonacorsi) decided not to come out."

Police saw a window screen had been removed and the window opened. A chair had been placed at the base of the window, police said. While walking around the house, officers spotted someone inside.

Lewis said officers called state police and a canine for help in tracking down Bonacorsi, who was found in the basement.

"He was hiding under some clothing and sleeping bags," Lewis said.

The police chief said Bonacorsi was found within a few minutes once the police dog arrived. He was taken into custody after a brief struggle.

Bonacorsi was charged with burglary, possession of burglary tools and resisting arrest. He was being held at the county jail on $10,000 bail after his arraignment yesterday.

Bonacorsi was convicted of three counts of felonious sexual assault in 1992 and has a 1994 conviction for witness tampering, according to the state sex offender registry.
