Condominiums may replace rundown house on Derry's Maple Street

DERRY — An abandoned house that has fallen into disrepair could soon be replaced with six new condominiums.

The Planning Board is scheduled to hear an application Thursday night to replace the building at 38 Maple St. with condos, a project it already approved a couple of years ago, according to Community Development Director George Sioras.

But that approval has expired, so it has to go before the board again, Sioras said. Since it's the exact same project, except for a new developer, Sioras said he doesn't see any problems with it being approved.

"It will really help that area," he said.

The building was owned by a bank, but was sold at auction last month to JRV Homes of Dracut, Mass.

The property's previous owner, Wave Properties Inc., ran into financial trouble after planners approved the project the first time and the bank foreclosed on the property, Sioras said.

Sioras said he's happy to see something done with the property since it's fallen into disrepair over the last couple of years. Last year, the town boarded up the windows and doors. The property had even spurred town officials to discuss a potential blight ordinance last year.

JRV Homes has built other condominiums in town and Sioras said he believes this project will help clean up that neighborhood.

"This is a win-win for everyone," Sioras said.

Most recently, the town had tried to tear down the building using money from the federal government's neighborhood stabilization grant program.

Earlier this month, Derry learned it had not been selected to receive money.SClBThursday night's meeting will be at 7 at the Derry Municipal Center.
