LONDONDERRY — The YMCA of Greater Londonderry is proposing to increase its before- and after-school program rates by 4 percent.

The YMCA currently operates the programs at the town's three elementary schools.

Representatives from the YMCA presented the proposed increase to the School Board at last week's meeting for approval. However, board members agreed that the YMCA should notify parents first of the changes before the board approved the proposed contract.

"The school district acts as a third-party administrator," said Peter Curro, the district's business administrator. "This money does not come out of the school budget."

The current monthly rate for five days of before-school care is $96. In the fall, this fee would be $99.84 and for the following year, $103.83. The rate for five days of after-school care is currently $179. In the fall it would be $186.16 and the following year, $193.61.

Parents Karen Creed and Sharon Johnson spoke on behalf of the programs that the YMCA offers during the meeting last week.

"On the whole, it's a great service to families," Creed said.

Johnson agreed.

"The kids all have respect for each other," she said. "I've found that the program has worked for myself, and the pricing over the years has been adequate. We get the service that we want for our children."

The YMCA representatives will return to the board on Tuesday, May 20.
