Londonderry Lego team still the tops
LONDONDERRY | The Inventioneers Lego team of Londonderry won the top prize | the Champion's Award | at the First Lego League Tournament held at Daniel Webster College in Nashua on Nov. 17.
Each team was evaluated in four categories: research quality, technical innovation, teamwork skills and robot performance. The Champion's award is given to the team with the highest score in these areas.
The Inventioneers, under the leadership of parent Lisa Evarts, is the defending New Hampshire State Champion in the league. In April, the team won first place at the world championships for their research project at the international tournament held in Atlanta, Ga.
For its winning project in April, the team designed and built a prototype filtration system using a filter membrane that filters at the nano level | targeting particles as small as one-billionth of a meter. This means parasites and bacteria could be separated out of contaminated water. The other goal the team met was that their system would not require a power source.
Team members are Paige Balcom, Sammy Vivian, Sarah Heimlich, Drew Vivian, Tristan Evarts, Emily Balcom, Kate Balcom, Jaiden Evarts and Nick Vivan. They will move on to the state tournament to be held Dec. 8 in Nashua.
First Lego League is a science and engineering program for students ages 9 to 14. It was started by Segway creator Dean Kamen to help excite young students about new technologies. This year's challenge is called Power Puzzle and encourages teams to explore renewable power sources for today and for the future.
The Digidudes, another Londonderry team, also goes on to the state tournament with a win in the teamwork category.
