Londonderry officials pick Sypek for planning job

LONDONDERRY — Town councilors made their final choice on who will be the newest Planning Board member.

Councilors chose former fire chief and longtime volunteer Al Sypek to fill the role. He and Anne Chiampa both wanted the job.

The final choice came after some questions by councilors concerning Chiampa’s impartiality when it came to the proposed Woodmont Commons project in town.

Chiampa has been very vocal in her feelings about the 600-acre, billion-dollar plan for the former Woodmont orchard land.

But Chiampa told councilors she could be objective on the issue if chosen to be on the Planning Board.

Both she and Sypek had been before the Town Council before, giving their reasons for wanting to serve on the Planning Board. Councilors questioned Chiampa’s previous statements about Woodmont and whether she could be impartial as a planning official.

“I apologize for letting my passion for this town overshadow the last interview,” Chiampa said.

Sypek, a former fire chief, told councilors he had no preconceived notions about Woodmont.

Councilor Joe Green thanked Chiampa for her service to the town and said there was another position out there that would suit her well.

“I think your passion for Londonderry is enlightening,” Green said. “I know you love Londonderry. I really appreciate that. I hope you continue to apply for different positions.”
