LONDONDERRY — The Londonderry Police Department, in conjunction with the New Hampshire Liquor Commission, conducted an authorized sobriety checkpoint on Rockingham Road (Route 28) near the Derry/Londonderry town line on Saturday night, June 27. The checkpoint was done on the southbound side of the road only.
A total of 190 contacts were made in which Londonderry officers spoke with operators of various vehicles that were stopped. The contacts resulted in two arrests for driving while intoxicated (DWI) and one drug arrest.
"The officers were briefed at 8 p.m. and conducted the checkpoint between 9:20 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.," said Chief William Hart.
Hart explained that the department is required to have an operational plan in place for such sobriety checkpoints.
"The operation was consistent with the plan approved by the Rockingham County Superior Court," Hart said.
This was the first checkpoint conducted since 2002. Hart said there were a number of operations during 2001 and 2002.
One of the contacts resulted in a summons being issued for an operator failing to have their vehicle safety inspected. As of this time the detailed information on the persons arrested is not available but all three were released on personal recognizance bail and received court dates to appear at the Derry District Court.
