Tee off for technology

DERRY — Golfers in the area are invited to tee off for technology in the 17th annual golf classic, hosted by 21st Century Learning Community.

The event is set for July 28 at the Windham Country Club and proceeds benefit the Learning Community, a local organization providing grant money to Derry schools for technology and programs not otherwise provided for in the regular district budget.

The golf classic begins with check-in between 6:30 and 7:15 a.m. and tee off begins at 7:30 a.m.

According to Derry Village Elementary School principal and 21st Century representative Stephen Miller, the organization began many years ago to help support technology in the town's schools. The annual golf classic helps bolster that support and helps fund several programs a year in the district through technology grants.

This past year, four technology incentives were honored and supported by 21st Century including West Running Brook Middle School's SmartMusic program, Gilbert H. Hood Middle School's Motion Madness curriculum work and a GPS learning program, and another district program where students could take a 360-degree virtual tour of areas around the state, including atop Mount Washington.

Miller said 21st Century gives out approximately three to five grants per year to staff members for the purpose of advancing technology in the school district.

"We started out very small years ago," Miller said, "but the money we have put away has become a substantial amount. We are trying to grow."

That growth includes inviting more golfer to get involved in the golf classic this month. So far, Miller said anywhere from 60 to 75 golfers are on board to participate but there is always room for more.

"We want to try and get it to be a bigger event," he said. "New golfers, sponsors, are always welcome."

The cost for the golf classic is $135 per golfer, including luncheon. Raffles and hole-in-one prizes are included in the day.

One of the grand prizes is a laptop computer by Apple.

In its 17th year, 21st Century Learning Community raises thousands of dollars each summer from tournament proceeds. For information about the golf event or 21st Century, contact Miller at 432-1233 or e-mail to smiller@derry.k12.nh.us.
