May 14, 2008 10:12 am DERRY — The Upper Room, a family resource center on Tsienneto Road, offers professional training sessions in parent education facilitation to help parents in the program Active Parenting of 5-12 and Teens. The Upper Room offers the Active Parenting sessions as part of its schedule of events to aid families, youth, and individuals and has partnered with Active Parenting Publishers to provide the training. The professional training session is set for June 9 from 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. and open to educators and professionals. Active Parenting NOW (5-12) and Active Parenting of Teens are parenting programs that demonstrate nonviolent discipline, effective communication and conflict resolution skills. "Helping educators and professionals prepare parents for the preadolescent and adolescent years is the purpose behind offering these workshops," said Upper Room executive director Kimberly Bavaro. "Educators will develop skills to help parents gain in-depth knowledge of parenting styles, gain concrete skills to build courage and self-esteem in children, how mutual respect can help parents avoid arguments, and how to guide frustrated parents of teens to gather self-confidence in their roles as parents." The full-day workshop also helps educators earn credits for professional certifications. Cost is $139 three weeks in advance; $149 in advance, or $169 at the door on session day. Groups of four from the same organization pay $109. To register for the Active Parenting workshop, call Active Parenting Publishers at 1-800-825-0060, ext. 120, for details.
