CHESTER — A Chester Academy sixth-grader has been honored for his interest in saving his planet.

Alex Cavaretta was honored last week for his poster entry in the Southern New Hampshire Planning Commission's annual student competition.

Alex received his award from SNHPC during a student breakfast held at Chester Academy. He was one of 130 students from 13 towns entering the contest this year.

This year, the contest focused on an Earth Day theme, according to Nick Coates, SNHPC representative. Coates, along with commission member and Chester resident Jean Methot, presented Alex with his award.

"It was so good to see students participate in the competition," Coates said, adding Chester had a total of 14 contest entries this year.

"The idea was to get students more involved in their communities," Coates said.

Since 2005, SNHPC has hosted the competition, designed to challenge students and make them more award of the planning process.

The contest invited students from grades kindergarten through 12 to explore their individual neighborhoods, communities and region and describe their theory on how it might look in the future by creating a poster and/or writing an essay. This year's Earth Day theme also encouraged students to explore the "three R's" — reduce, reuse, and recycle — in their artwork.

Since the contest began, the commission has received hundreds of entries. Last year, a young Derry kindergarten student, Julia Brockney, won a top award for her poster.

Coates said Alex should be commended for his artwork and his desire to work hard to save the planet.

The Southern New Hampshire Planning Commission serves the towns of Auburn, Bedford, Candia, Chester, Deerfield, Derry, Goffstown, Hooksett, Londonderry, Manchester, New Boston, Raymond and Weare.
