LONDONDERRY — It was a situation typical of this couple who were named Citizens of the Year at Town Meeting on Saturday, March 15.
Steve Lee was helping the Londonderry group at a Destination Imagination competition in Kingston and Julie Lee had a high school jazz ensemble event to attend right after the meeting.
Outgoing Town Council Chairman Joe Paradis presented the award to Julie Lee, saying she and her husband were the quintessential citizens — people who give to the community without accolades.
"Steve has been helping with the summer Concerts on the Common for a number of years," Paradis said.
Steve Lee has also served on the Zoning Board of Adjustment and has been active in the Arts Council and Cultural Resource Council.
Julie Lee is an elected poll worker and is currently president of the Friends of Music, the parent group of the Londonderry Lancers Marching Band and Color Guard.
"They are very active in the social life of the Londonderry United Methodist Church," Paradis said. "They're happily married and I think they genuinely enjoy each other."
"I certainly didn't expect this," Julie Lee said. "I was just coming to Town Meeting and I got roped into checking in at the door as well."
Then, true to form, Julie Lee put in a couple of plugs for the Parent Teacher Organization dance taking place that night and for the Lancers Band auction fundraiser coming up on April 12.
