LONDONDERRY — The most contested race in this year's election is for a position on a commission that may never come to be.

On Friday afternoon, the final day for candidates to file, the number of candidates for one of nine seats on a Charter Commission jumped from two to 21. However, voters must first approve the formation of the commission at Town Meeting next month.

Charter Commission candidates are Clarissa Navarro, Lara McIntyre, Christopher Melcher, Marie O'Keefe, Christopher Paul, Debra Paul, Tammy Siekmann, Kathy Wagner, Anne Warner, Gregory Warner, Stephen Young, Al Baldasaro, Marty Bove, Dana Coons, Bruce Dorner, Glenn Douglas, Brian Farmer, Fred Heinrich, Jay Hooley, Robert Lebreux and James Loiselle.

Last summer, councilors voted, 3-2, to create a Charter Commission, with a goal of moving the town closer to an SB2 style of government, already in place on the school side.

Both Wagner and Farmer, who are running for the commission, did not seek re-election to the Town Council. Five candidates are running for two three-year positions on the council — Timothy Siekmann, George Dolan, John Farrell, Thomas Freda and Joseph Green.

Other contested races are for Budget Committee and town clerk/tax collector.

Lisa Whittemore, John Curran and Daniel Lekas are running for two three-year positions on the Budget Committee.

Town clerk/tax collector Meg Seymour has held the office for 10 years. She has run unopposed in three previous elections, but Deborah Nowicki is challenging her this year.
