Derry Medical therapy program aids patients

DERRY — Derry Medical Center and Londonderry Family Practice are making great strides in giving patients a healthy outlook on life.

Since starting the program Metagenics’ FirstLine Therapy therapeutic lifestyle program, more than 200 patients have seen improvements in health and a lower risk for chronic illness.

The program provides a practical system for clinicians to implement a personally tailored program of healthy eating, nutritional supplements, exercise and stress management to help patients manage conditions including diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease.

“The FirstLine Therapy program not only helped our patients with metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease but also had a parallel effect on other conditions as well such as irritable bowel syndrome, food sensitivities and inflammation,” said Dr. Ted Brooks, Derry Medical Center medical director. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one of every two Americans suffer from at least one chronic illness. Chronic disease also contributes to seven out of 10 deaths in the U.S.

Derry Medical Center now has three lifestyle educators to help prescribing physicians educating patients on the fundamentals of the FirstLine program.

Patient Bridget Paris said the program has helped her deal with conditions like chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and ADHD.

“In a few short months, I have cut my blood pressure medication in half,” she said. “I have entirely eliminated the medications I was taking for chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and ADHD as well. I have lost 55 pounds, gained my health and self-confidence, and am actively living my life again instead of watching from the sidelines.”

Sue Olsen, director of the FirstLine program at Derry Medical, said the program focuses on sustaining healthy behaviors and also weight loss.

“It is inspiring to see these patients literally reverse their chronic illnesses, gain energy, improve digestion and sleep, and achieve countless other health benefits,” she said.
