DERRY — Safe Kids New Hampshire, Derry Police Department, Buckle Up NH Coalition members and the Community Alliance for Teen Safety are offering a child passenger safety checkpoint on Saturday, June 1, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hood Commons, 55 Crystal Ave.
The checkpoint is a free, drop-in event, intended to raise awareness of the dangers of improperly installed car seats and to provide an opportunity for parents to bring their used car seats for proper disposal.
Although 96 percent of parents believe they install and use their child safety seats correctly, an estimated 82 percent of child safety seats are not installed and used properly.
In a crash, inappropriately restrained children are nearly three and a half times more likely to be seriously injured than children in correctly adjusted restraints. Of children ages 8 and under who died in motor vehicle crashes in 2011, 29 percent were unrestrained.
On June 1, certified child passenger safety technicians will be on hand at the checkpoint to show how to properly install a car seat. Bring your child and the owner’s manuals for your vehicle and your car seat.
