LONDONDERRY — Compassionate Care Hospice of Londonderry graduated 14 new hospice volunteers in April and May.
April’s class included Diane Lozeau, Shauna Haggerty, Meriel Labeck, Marcia Millard and Jane Siefken. In May, graduates included Kelly Carter, Angeline Fiest, Matthew Hotchkiss, Ben Olson, Ruth Provencal, Brittany Rivais and Patti Stankus.
Matthew Hotchkiss and Ben Olson are both only 14 years old. Matthew’s mother is Compassionate Care administrator Linda Hotchkiss. Ben Olson is the son of human resources liaison Kim Martin.
Olson said her son was motivated to volunteer during the summer by his Londonderry High School guidance counselor, who encourages students to do community service.
Matthew has had a lifetime of exposure in the field of hospice. His mother is a nurse practitioner, specializing in palliative care and hospice for more than 20 years.
Ben was inspired by not only his mom Kim, but by the death of grandfather Stephen Jones, who had received hospice care.
Volunteers are an integral part of the support that hospice patients and their families receive. Compassionate Care Hospice is 30 volunteers strong and growing.
Hospice training is offered in the spring and fall. For more information about hospice care and volunteer opportunities, call 421-9987.
