Homeless network gets boost from Bishop's Fund

DERRY — Family Promise of Greater Rockingham County received $5,000 in funding from the Bishop’s Charitable Assistance Fund for day-to-day operations of its Interfaith Hospitality Network.

The network provides a safe place for homeless families with children while assisting them to return to permanent housing. The Network serves Salem, Derry, and 14 surrounding towns in Southern New Hampshire, offering families food, shelter, and social services.

“This grant covers two weeks of IHN operations, allowing us to help our guest families get back on their feet,” said Melanie Nesheim, president of FPGRC. “We are very grateful to the Bishop’s Charitable Assistance Fund.”

It is not commonly known that there are at least 158 homeless families in this area. Family Promise is a local affiliate of a national organization with more than 180 affiliates in 42 states around the country.

A local affiliate engages congregations of any faith to assist homeless children and families by taking turns providing overnight stays and meals in their church buildings. Families spend the daytime at a centrally located Day Center, working with professional staff on the issues that led to homelessness.

The Bishop’s Charitable Assistance Fund makes grants to tax-exempt organizations without regard to religious affiliation for projects that help people in New Hampshire meet their basic needs.

The fund is operated by volunteer lay men and women who serve as directors and who make recommendations to the Bishop of Manchester for grants to any organization in New Hampshire whose mission is consistent with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. The fund raises money through solicitation of individuals, businesses, and philanthropic organizations. An annual accounting of funds raised and disbursements is available at
