DERRY — The holidays can be a busy and stressful time of year. For individuals who suffer from depression, this hectic season and the winter months can be particularly challenging, leaving many people feeling an even bluer mood at this time of year.
The Center for Life Management is hosting an open house to introduce and provide information about Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation therapy for the treatment of major depression. TMS is a breakthrough, non-drug treatment for depression that is offering new hope to depression sufferers.
The TMS Open House will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 6, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Center for Life Management, 10 Tsienneto Road.
Visitors to the open house will learn more about TMS treatment for depression, have an opportunity to see a demonstration of the NeuroStar TMS device and meet with TMS staff members, who can answer questions. Light refreshments will be available.
TMS therapy is done on an outpatient basis by prescription only under the supervision of a psychiatrist. During treatment, the patient is awake and seated in a comfortable chair, much like a dentist's chair.
A device about the size of a cupped hand rests lightly on the head and delivers a series of targeted magnetic pulses that stimulate the part of the brain involved with regulating mood. The strength of the magnetic pulse is the same as that used in magnetic resonance imaging machines.
