DERRY — Everyone has a hero — someone who has made a difference in his or her life. The administrative staff at Parkland Medical Center is asking employees and members of the community to honor their own personal heroes during the second annual Tree of Lights ceremony Dec. 15.
Bulbs may be purchased for the tree in any amount, with all proceeds going to the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Derry.
Last year's event raised $4,266 — after the hospital matched contributions.
"This year, Parkland will add $2,000 to whatever is collected," hospital spokeswoman Nancy Notis said.
People can purchase a bulb in memory of a past hero who has had a positive impact in their lives as well, Notis said.
"We picked out some of the neediest families to help with this money," said Art McLean, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club. "We'll get food baskets and gifts for them. This is really wonderful."
The tree will be lighted Wednesday, Dec. 15, at 6 p.m., just outside the hospital's main entrance. Afterward, all are invited to come inside for some refreshments.
To make a donation, stop by the hospital's front desk at 1 Parkland Drive, or call 421-2551.
