Local teacher chosen for trip to Turkey

DERRY — A local language teacher is one of four educators selected to go on a trip to Turkey.

The World Affairs Council of New Hampshire has selected Pinkerton Academy language teacher Peter Schmidt to join three other teachers from around the state on a tour of Turkey next month.

Schmidt is a Spanish teacher at Pinkerton and said Turkey has always fascinated him.

"To me, Turkey is a fascinating crossroads of history, geography, culture and religion," he said.

The group will be in Turkey July 10-24, and will create educational programs for their classroom and the community.

Other New Hampshire representatives include Holly Gladsden of Wilton, Jeremy Hall of Concord and Kelly Nelson of Lincoln.

The trip is part of the Teacher Study Tours program, organized and sponsored by the Turkish Cultural Foundation, in cooperation with the World Affairs Council of America and the World Affairs Council of New Hampshire.

The teachers were chosen by the state group based on their interest in and dedication to global education and understanding of other cultures.

Schmidt said he loves to travel the world and this opportunity hit on so many of his interests.

"I couldn't help but at least apply," he said. "From visiting archeological sites, to touring iconic buildings to visiting schools and meeting with civic leaders, it was the perfect program for me."

The New Hampshire group will join dozens of other middle school and high school educators from across the county.

Schmidt and the others attended a professional development workshop offered by the World Affairs Council of New Hampshire before being selected to participate in the trip.

Upon their return from the 14-day tour, the teachers will work with the council to develop cultural and educational programs that introduce Turkey to their local communities and classrooms.

Schmidt siad he would bring back language, art, music and history to his Pinkerton classroom.
