Students, enrich your summer

By Julie Huss

DERRY — Just because it's summer vacation, students don't have to put down their clarinets or stop coming to school.

Students enjoying a summer off from school can continue to learn in this year's "Create Your Own Camp" enrichment program.

Every year, the Derry School District offers a full schedule of classes and programs in two sessions.

Registration is now underway for a wide variety of classes this summer including crafts, music and technology.

Deadline to register is June 1 or when class is filled.

All classes are held at Gilbert H. Hood Middle School.

Sessions begin July 9 and run through the end of the month.

Session times are 8 to 10 a.m.; 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., and 12:45 to 2:45 p.m.

Children can choose one, two or three sessions.

There are new offering this year, including team sports sessions, ceramics, My Little Pony Creation, For the Birds, Chess and Shake 'n' Bake.

Returning favorites include origami, Lego robotics, archery, cake decorating, cupcakes, drums, chef's club, song writing/recording studio and digital movie-making.

In addition to these one-week courses, the district's music department offers a summer band camp for middle-schoolers.

Sessions run July 9-13 and July 16-20 and are also held at Hood. Camp runs from 8 to 10 a.m. for students entering sixth grade with some playing experience, and from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. for students entering seventh, eighth and ninth grades.

The two-week sessions are once again led by district music teacher Chris Gantner. They give young musicians a chance to learn new music and polish their skills in preparation for what lies ahead in their music programs once school starts again in the fall.

A concert will be held on the last day of camp.
