West Running Brook takes on shaving challenge

Derry News

---- — DERRY — West Running Brook Middle School staff members are sporting some close shaves these days.

Staff and teachers took the plunge on April 19 to shave their heads or cut many inches off for a good cause, raising almost $12,000 to support one of their own.

At a pep rally in February, the challenge was made for staff members to commit to shaving their heads to support West Running Brook seventh-grader Alanna Marcotte, who is battling cancer.

Teachers and other staff members agreed to shave off their hair if enough money was raised to support the Marcotte family as part of the school’s “Bald is Beautiful” campaign.

“Alanna is bald and beautiful now, but she’s always been beautiful,” West Running Brook social studies teacher Audrey Allen said. “We heard about Alanna; we are trying to get donations, but I wanted to do something bigger.”

Allen’s quest helped make her bald and beautiful, too, as she was one of the staffers with a new look.

“And when I say shave, I mean all of it,” a long-haired Allen told students in February.

Principal Leslie Saucier was part of the group shaving session. Others jumping on board include assistant principals Lorrie Belinsky and Justin Krieger.

Other West Running Brook staff members taking the plunge were Mison Hugo, Steve Campo, Angela Barber and Devon VanCurren.

Merchant Motors tossed in $4,000 to help the cause.

It was a total school commitment to help Alanna, who is facing cancer treatments for the third time.

“The assembly was based on hope and never giving up,” Belinsky said.

Alanna’s progress is documented daily on her Facebook page, “The Brave Little Soul Alanna Marcotte.”
