Pinkerton math team scores

By Julie Huss

---- — DERRY — It’s all about the numbers.

For students on Pinkerton Academy’s math team, it’s also about having fun and learning, while figuring out problems and equations.

Team members are finding numeric success and are undefeated so far, heading to a possible championship in the league.

The team took top honors last year in the Tri-State Math League.

Math teacher and adviser Ellen Berchtold said her team is a bright collection of very math-oriented students.

“They get along well and have fun,” she said. “It’s a great group and very willing to work.”

Members include students who excel in all sorts of advanced levels of math, including geometry, calculus and algebra.

The team travels to competitions throughout the season. The varsity team has 10 members.

So far this year, the team has won all its meets and is in first place by 69 points over Londonderry.

Team member Natalie Kukshtel, a senior and co-captain, said she loves math and the challenge.

“It’s different every time,” she said. “It also gives me a chance to practice.”

That extra math practice is a boost to what she does in the classroom every day, she said.

Rebekah Terry, a junior, said it’s good to compete and be able to do different things with math.

“It’s kind of cool,” she said.

For Zin Zhang, a senior and another team co-captain, math helps solve problems that may someday transfer to another life experience.

“You find multiple solutions,” he said, “and you can solve anything.”

Putting what they learn with numbers into real life scenarios is a key point, said senior Christian Albertelli.

“I just like the real world applications,” he said. “They are not just numbers.”

In addition to loving numbers, most team members also participate in other school activities like band and the robotics team.

In addition to the varsity team, there are also up to a dozen students participating at the junior varsity level.
