LONDONDERRY — A specialized tutoring center on Orchard View Drive is closing its doors.
The Oxford Learning Center closed last week after serving students in the area since 2005.
Director Richard Whitehead said the center was instrumental in serving the tutorial needs of thousands of students over the years from all over the region.
Oxford Learning is an education franchised business that Whitehead and his wife, Cathy, decided to open at the Orchard View Drive location.
The school taught students in preschool up through grade 12.
"We had programs for all grades," Whitehead said. "and we got the little ones reading."
The Whiteheads signed a 10-year agreement with the company, with locations in both the United States and Canada, and began teaching students needing specialized help in reading, English, math, organizational skills and more.
The company has gone through some changes, Whitehead said. With his building lease ending and more franchise fees to incur with the company rebranding itself with a new name, it was time to go.
"I just felt it was going to be different; it's a shame for all of us," Whitehead said. "I really enjoyed helping those kids."
Oxford Learning had a staff of approximately 15 tutors.
Tutor Laura Shea has been with Oxford Learning almost from the start.
She taught all subjects and said even though the center is closing, most teachers built strong relationships with students and will continue to work with them in other settings.
"We're going to continue," she said. "(The students) won't have to start from scratch."
Whitehead said he was sad he couldn't help more students, but was happy many would maintain their educational relationships with their tutors.
