Derry teachers honor their own

By Julie Huss

DERRY — Top educators were honored by their district last week .

Two teachers from Derry Village Elementary School took high honors during the Derry Education Association's annual spring meeting and awards event held last week at West Running Brook Middle School.

Derry Village art teacher Claire Scanlon earned a Teacher of the Year award in a surprise announcement.

Also being honored as a top teacher was Derry Village first grade teacher Joyce Waterhouse, who was unable to attend the event.

Scanlon's award, given following nominations by her peers, credited the longtime district art teacher for her commitment to children and their creativity.

Scanlon led a months-long art project to create a tile mural in the lobby of Derry Village school.

Also honored by the DEA was local artist/potter Michael Gibbons, who earned a Friends of Education Award.

Gibbons joined Scanlon in the classroom for many months to help students create their own tiles to use in the final mural project.

Gibbons has been on board in the Derry school district for years coming into classrooms to share his talents with art and especially pottery.

In addition to naming top teachers for the year, the DEA honored students with annual scholarships.

Seniors Jennifer Zocco and Angela Scionti received scholarships to use for their college education.
