Hood hosts cultural diversity program
DERRY — Gilbert H. Hood Middle School’s social studies department along with the Positive School Environment Committee presented “Our Global Neighborhood” to the student body May 16. The program was Inspired by UNESCO’s “World Day for Cultural Diversity.”
Students experienced cultural enrichment workshops in the morning providing exposure to music, sports, games and crafts from different countries. Some of the workshops included West African Dance provided by Pinkerton Academy’s Concert Dance Company; Taekwondo provided by Sidekicks Taekwondo Studio located in Londonderry; Australian Aboriginal face painting; French gel painting; South American coffee and dessert.
The end of the day culminated in a showcase of traditional African music by Theo Martey and the Akwaaba Ensemble.
Students created personal passports which they used as they traveled to different lands and experienced different cultures.
Local design students honored
DERRY — The New Hampshire Chapter of the American Institute of Architects announced the results of its 2014 High School Design Competition. Awards were given May 1 at a chapter meeting at Keene State College.
This year’s design program asked students to design a Submarine History Center at Albacore Park in Portsmouth, N.H. for the continued display of the U.S.S. Albacore and for the display of several unique Naval artifacts.
The contest asked for a one-story structure design that was respectful of the surrounding environment and complementary to the building’s function and design.
Student designs included entrance, visitors desk, submarine plaque, exhibit space and gift shop.
Students were given specific building needs and an actual site plan to work with.
Pinkerton Academy’s Matt Demio took a first place honor for the Best Graphic Presentation Describing the Design Solution category.
Pinkerton Academy’s Tori Kort and Andrew Husson took a second-place award for Best Design, Superiority in all Aspects of Design Solution, Model and Graphic Presentation; Jacque Greazzo took a second-place award for Best Model Describing the Design Solution.
