Graduate earns Chamber honor
LONDONDERRY — The Greater Derry Londonderry Chamber of Commerce has awarded its 2014 Kyle B. Ross Memorial Scholarship to Londonderry graduating senior Shannon Corcoran.
The Chamber annually gives a scholarship to a deserving graduate that exemplifies academic achievement, community service, and leadership qualities.
The award was given during the Londonderry High School academic awards ceremony June 12.
Corcoran earned a sixth-place ranking in the Class of 2014, earning a 4.46 grade point average. She is a member of the Math Honors Society, Latin National Honors Society, French Honors Society, and National Honor Society.
She is also an avid dancer and will attend Clemson University in the fall to study mathematics sciences and engineering.
Barka unveils class sculpture
DERRY — Ernest P. Barka Elementary School students celebrated their new class sculpture project in a special unveiling ceremony June 16 at the school.
The new sculpture project is part of the school’s Nature’s Classroom area of the property and involved fifth-grade students working with an artist-in-residence to create the works of art to enhance the garden area.
This is the second-year artist program made available to Barka through a grant sponsored by the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts and the school’s PTA association.
This year’s artist, Emile Birch, worked with Barka students on sculpture projects. Fifth-grade students focused on the four large sculptures that were unveiled recently.
Student earns music scholarship
DERRY — A Derry student has received a music scholarship to attend a summer program.
Adam Claussen will receive a scholarship awarded by the Freese Brother Big Band. He plays alto saxophone in the Pinkerton Academy Wind Ensemble and Jazz Combo, and tenor saxophone in the school’s Jazz Band. He will attend the Eastman Summer Jazz Studies program in Rochester, N.Y.
