Few retire this year from Derry School District

DERRY — The school district is saying goodbye to only a handful of staff members in 2012.

Three district retirees were on hand June 12 during a School Board meeting, receiving gifts, flowers and their original contracts in frames.

It's one of the smallest numbers to leave the district at the end of a school year, board members said.

Those honored were Mindy Schuman-Vye, the district's reading specialist and director of federal projects; Gilbert H. Hood language arts teacher Kathy Hamilton; and Ernest P. Barka Elementary staff member Judy Pasternak.

Schuman-Vye came to Derry in 1984 at a salary of $10,260. Hamilton earned $22,180 in her first year in Derry and Pasternak earned $28,038.

Also leaving his post this year is East Derry Memorial principal Tom Poliseno.

Kim Hogan will take the lead at that school and will leave her current position of assistant principal at Gilbert H. Hood Middle School.

School Superintendent Mary Ellen Hannon said this was the first time in her tenure in Derry that so few teachers and staff members announced they would retire.

A reception was held prior to the meeting where School Board members, teachers, families and school staff members said goodbye.
