LHS senior organizes walk to raise money in friend's memory

LONDONDERRY — Kacie DeAvilla organized a 10K walk Saturday afternoon for her friend Rebecca Tenney's memorial scholarship fund as her senior project at Londonderry High School.

Rebecca would have graduated with Kacie next month, but she died at the beginning of her junior year at Children's Hospital Boston from complications of viral meningitis.

"I've known Becca since we were in Girl Scouts together in 2003," Kacie said. "I really wanted to do this. The senior project is optional."

By Friday, Kacie had 50 participants signed up for the walk around Londonderry High's track. She also had 30 volunteers. Many were from her Unitarian Universalist Church in Manchester. Some were friends and family, some were from the high school's Pay It Forward Club and others were from the Londonderry Police Department's Explorers.

The Explorers, headed up by high school senior Brianna Stanley, need to participate in three community events annually.

Kacie also organized a bake sale for the day of the walk.

"I began planning this in October," she said.

The registration fee for the walk was $15 and walkers could raise money by having sponsors. Kacie will also collect money through the school to add to the scholarship fund.

Checks can be made out to the Rebecca Tenney Memorial Scholarship Fund and sent to Londonderry High School, Main Office, Attn: Kacie DeAvilla, 295 Mammoth Road, Londonderry, 03053.
