Lancer Spirit staffer wins award

LONDONDERRY — For the fifth year in a row, a Lancer Spirit staff member will represent New Hampshire at the Al Neuharth Free Spirit Scholarship and Journalism Conference in Washington, D.C.

The Lancer Spirit is the school's award-winning student newspaper under the leadership of advisor Mary DeWinkleer.

Londonderry High junior Stephen Wong will travel to D.C. this summer to attend the conference at the Newseum, the Freedom Forum's museum of news, media and the First Amendment.

He is the sixth student from Londonderry High School to receive this award.

In 2008, Ryan Rivard and Katie Lannan received the award; in 2009, the award was given to Eoghan Kelly; in 2010 it was given to Jen DePiero; and in 2011, it was given to Meghan Rimol.

The annual Al Neuharth Free Spirit Scholarship and Journalism Conference program awards $1,000 college scholarships to rising high school seniors who are interested in pursuing a career in journalism and who demonstrate qualities of "free spirit."

The scholarships and conference are designed to inspire and encourage students to pursue journalism.
