---- — LONDONDERRY — Londonderry Middle School got an early jump on Veterans Day and raised a flag last week to honor its own.

The middle school paid respects to two school staff members who are veterans. Stephen Costa and Brandon Stumpf both served in the military and were special guests at the flag ceremony Nov. 7.

The Student Council led the ceremony at the front entrance flagpole. The program included music, speeches and special guests.

“Everyone has a family member or someone they know that’s a veteran,” Student Council advisor Cynthia Hursh said.

She said the students planned the ceremony and did a lot of research about Veterans Day and its meaning.

The school also honored veterans with special announcements each day and a “hat day” where students pay $1 to wear a hat with money going to support veteran causes.

Students filled 100 stockings with supplies and treats to send to soldiers serving overseas.

Supplies like beef jerky and Slim Jims still are being collecteds, Hursh said.
