LONDONDERRY — Students at Londonderry Middle School brought some of the world’s most popular storybook characters to the stage last weekend when they staged the musical “Into the Woods Jr.”
Students took on the roles of the Three Little Pigs, Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, and Cinderella and her stepsisters in the Stephen Sondheim musical, where the lives of various characters are intertwined as they search for their most cherished wishes.
The play was under the direction of middle school seventh-grade social studies teacher Jen Maurice. She has taken on the drama club productions for many years and said this year the cast was perfect for “In the Woods Jr.”
“This was a good ensemble show,” Maurice said, noting there were many character roles to fill and she had a big selection of talented students to play the characters.
Several high school students returned to their middle school roots to assist the young cast with makeup and costumes.
“I did drama here for three years,” high school sophomore Libby Keller said.
Maurice said that opening night last Friday was a near sellout crowd and other big audiences were expected throughout the weekend.
