DERRY — The Upper Room honored the Class of 2012 and awarded GED certificates to 26 students in a ceremony held June 1.

Graduates gathered in the facility's side yard to receive diplomas for completing the Upper Room program, a partnership with Pinkerton Academy.

The program gives students a chance to learn and excel away from a traditional classroom environment.

Upper Room officials credited families and friends for offering a strong support system to students enrolled in the GED program.

Upper Room GED program coordinator Brenda Guggisberg said students overcame many obstacles to get to graduation, and everyone should be commended for their hard work.

"All of you have applied yourself in ways you never have before," she said.

Officials also credited the successful partnership with Pinkerton Academy, saying the high school steps out of the box and strives to make sure all students get an education, no matter what the circumstance.

Bill Foye, head of Pinkerton's Continuing Education program, told the graduates he hoped they would keep the momentum going. He compared their life to that of a new car.

"Today, you get the keys to the car; the tank is full, full of gas," he said. "Eventually, you will run out of gas, you have to refuel and keep going to succeed."

Pinkerton official Bill Patriquin told the graduates that they will have many options in life and it will be up to them to make the right choices.

"You have taken a huge leap toward a successful future," he said. "Don't stop, keep the momentum that you learned in this program going."

The Upper Room Class of 2012 includes: Joseph Chubbuck, Michael Devine, Christopher Dunn, Thomas Frazer, Jessica Gallant, Jason Gerry, Stacey Gerry, Shawn Goodwin, Joshua Guthrie, Tayah Hobbs, Bille Jean Holt, Jacqueline Long, Christopher McDonald, Anthony Murray, Joseph Munoz, Andrew Newman, Cameron Perry, Raymond Philbrick, Alyssa Robichaud, Riley Rushton, Alexander Suffreti, Keenan Walker, Cameron Waller and Ryan Whorf.
