---- — DERRY — Teachers and staff at Ernest P. Barka Elementary School honored one of their own last week.
The school named Cindy Najem as its Teacher of the Month.
The awards are hosted by the Derry Education Association and given regularly to a teacher or staff member who goes above and beyond the call of duty at the school.
Each month, a different school and teacher is in the spotlight for the awards.
In the nomination letter, Barka staff members called Najem a dedicated and hard-working individual.
“Those who are fortunate enough to work closely with her have experienced her willingness to share resources, ideas and effective teaching practices,” the letter stated.
Najem was one of the original staff members when Barka first opened its doors. She began as a second-grade teacher and moved to the kindergarten program this year.
She credited her peers and coworkers for her success, saying it is an honor to be part of the Barka team.
“Thank you, but everybody works hard,” she said.
Principal Daniel LaFleur said Najem is well deserving to be tops for the month.
“She’s everything in a teacher you could ever hope for,” LaFleur said. “She’s very humble, but she does a lot of hard work. She’s a real gem.”
The Derry Education Association regularly honors district teachers for their educational work and commitment to the schools.
