Town puts its surplus on the auction block

Town holds surplus auction

DERRY — There’s definitely something for everyone at this auction.

The list is long this year, from simple items like a pair of gloves to a leather wallet, from an unclaimed bicycle to tools and a snowplow, this sale has it all.

On Oct. 26, a long list of items — collected or left over from town departments or found through the Derry Police Department — will go on the auction block at police headquarters at Municipal Drive beginning at 9 a.m.

The annual event makes all of the town’s surplus items available to the public, with proceeds going to the town, according to Derry police Capt. George Feole. He said the list of items is long every year and includes anything from outdated electronics and unused office lockers to Public Works vehicles and equipment.

Other items, like recovered GPS systems or radar detectors, are often too difficult to return to owners when serial numbers are unknown.

Bikes not sold may be donated to charity, he said.

This year’s list includes electronics, shelving units, Nintendo games, cameras, binoculars, and even women’s clothing, eyeliner and hair color. Even a simple towel dispenser and paper clip holder make the 2013 list.

Anthing that’s unclaimed, unwanted, or donated from the town, ends up on the block.

Items from town departments were still streaming onto the list this week, Feole said. That included 34 more items donated by Derry Public Library, including electronics and computers.

This year’s list also includes six vehicles — five trucks and one forklift — that may require a minimum bid.

“It looks like Public Works was establishing some minimum reserves,” Feole said.

Other items may go quickly and at bargain prices.

“We have it all this year,” Feole said.

He said town departments offer many interesting surplus items for the auction each year, and event attendance is always good. Alan Cote, superintendent of operations for the highway department, will serve as auctioneer.

He said the auction could net several thousand dollars for the town.

The entire property list is available at website derry.nh.us.
