Community center offers fun for seniors

DERRY — They take their games very seriously.

Some bring the good luck charms and stand them close by as they maneuver their bingo cards in a definite formation.

Others take their time to play the proper card during a friendly game of Uno or Forty-Fives.

It’s the game schedule at the Marion Gerrish Community Center on West Broadway, keeping many area seniors happy and in tune with some classic card games and other activities.

A new offering is Mahjong to be offered beginning next month.

The center has been offering the community a full schedule of events for years.

“With the addition of Mahjong on Tuesdays, we have a senior activity here at the Marion Gerrish Community Center every day of the week,” center director Sarah Garvin said.

Nearly 150 groups and organizations meet at the center throughout the year. In addition, a thrift shop operates in the lower level of the building, with proceeds going back into the support and upkeep of the building.

Game activities throughout the week are: bridge, Monday and Friday, 1 to 3 p.m.; Uno, Wednesday, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.; bingo, Thursday, 1 to 3 p.m.; cribbage, Friday, 9 to 11 a.m.; and Forty-Fives, Friday 1 to 4 p.m.

All are invited to come and play their favorites. To learn more about the community center and the schedule of games, call 434-8866 or visit mgccderrynh.org.
