DERRY — A sea of team colors and banners will sweep through Derry April 17 en route to O'Hara Field as the town celebrates Little League Opening Day.
Hundreds of local youth will parade their way through town down to the field where ceremonies will kick off the 2010 season.
The annual event brings out players who make up approximately 34 teams as part of the community program, including AA and AAA Division teams, Majors, Seniors and this year's first girls softball league.
The parade steps off at MacGregor Park on East Broadway at 8:30 a.m., then winds its way down Broadway to Railroad Avenue then to the field off South Avenue.
The Red Star Twirlers, American Legion representatives, Dance Progressions, Tim Barchard's Martial Arts Studio, Derry Boy Scouts and many more will be part of the baseball-softball parade.
Once the parade reaches O'Hara Field, ceremonies include the throwing out of the first pitch to Cameron Riley, a Little Leaguer and cancer survivor. Another team member, Candace Moore, is currently battling cancer and is invited to throw the first ball to Riley.
As part of opening day activities, more than 14 community groups and businesses will set up tables, and offer information and giveaways during the day.
