Library patrons get tech support

Library's tech sessions keep patrons up to speed

By Julie Huss

---- — DERRY — It was a petting zoo without any animals.

Derry Public Library hosted a technology “petting zoo” to introduce patrons to iPads, Kindle, Nooks and other hand-held devices.

The library hosts a full schedule of technology events aimed at helping patrons learn all they can about technology, computers and getting a grasp on electronic basics.

The popular Technology Thursdays offer everything from a drop-in time for people to come in and ask questions to more formal Internet training sessions and computer skill workshops.

Library staff member Meryle Zusman led the technology event last week. She said people come to the library with all sorts of questions about computers and at all levels of expertise.

“These are some people that just need the basics,” she said. “Some people don’t even (know how to) hold a mouse.”

Last week, patrons came to learn all about e-readers and smaller devices like the iPad.

Sisters Margie and Elizabeth Ives came together. Elizabeth Ives is also the head of the library’s board of trustees.

“I’m here because I know nothing,” Margie Ives said. “I can only go up.”

Patron Arleen Potter said she enjoys what the library offers.

“The library has been offering these little sessions,” she said.

She was anxious to learn more about some of the smaller electronic devices.

About nine people gathered around the table to touch the devices, play with them and learn the basics from Zusman.

“Everything is online,” Zusman said. “People just need to know.”

Margie Ives was very interested in the iPad. After seeing Zusman demonstrate the camera, keyboard skills, and all the other features, it became her favorite.

“This iPad could be the ‘all’ of devices,” she said.

The library is proud of its Technology Thursdays, Zusman said. She said library staff members work hard to make sure programs like this are offered to keep people educated and aware of all that is available in book form and electronically.

“And it’s a lot cleaner than a real zoo,” Zusman said.

Derry Public Library’s next Technology Thursday event is Sept. 5 with “Computers for Absolute Beginners from 6:30 to 8 p.m. On Sept. 12, a technology drop-in session is planned at 6:30 p.m. People can stop by the library to ask questions or find out how to use library databases and eBooks. On Sept. 19, the library hosts “Internet Basics” at 6:30 p.m. and on Sept. 26 another “Device Petting Zoo” is planned at 6:30 p.m.
