Derryfest planning underway for Sept. 21

DERRY — Organizers of this year’s Derryfest celebration invite everyone to “Come See What’s New.”

That’s the official theme for the 24th annual Derryfest celebration Sept. 21 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in MacGregor Park on East Broadway.

There is no rain date.

Derryfest features a long list of organizations, groups, town personalities and entertainment all rolled into one day.

“Derryfest is a great way to kick off the beautiful fall season and get to know your neighbors,” Derryfest Committee member Mike Gendron said.

Derryfest kicks off the night before, Sept. 20, with the popular Derry Village Rotary Club spaghetti supper at Pinkerton Academy’s senior cafe. Dinner is served from 5 to 7 p.m. The cost is $5.

On Derryfest morning, the day begins with a traditional breakfast hosted by St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, across the street at 63 East Broadway from 7 to 10 a.m. The menu includes pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage, muffins, coffee and juice.

Dozens of booths then fill the park space, putting area businesses, community groups and organizations in the spotlight. Entertainers, including local singers, dancers and other performers, take the park stage throughout the day.

The entertainment lineup this year includes the Red Star Twirlers, Souled Out Show Band, Dance Progressions, Bel Airs Doo Wop, magician Bob Riordan, and the winners of this year’s Greater Derry’s Got Talent show.

The giant “roaming tortoise” also returns to the park this year to greet visitors.

At noon, local VFW and American Legion members will host the annual MIA/POW ceremony at the park monument area.

In addition, Derryfest hosts children’s events, demonstrations, information on the town and much more.

All Derryfest events are broadcast live that day on Derry Community TV, Channel 17.

A shuttle bus will run from designated parking areas at Fireye on Manchester Road, Nutfield Professional Building on Birch Street, Birch Heights on Kendall Pond Road and the school administrative office building on South Main Street. Shuttles will run every 15 minutes.
