Filing period

opens soon

Anyone wishing to run for elected office in town can do so beginning Jan. 23. The filing period runs through Feb. 1 for open town offices, including a District 2 town councilor, District 4 town councilor, councilor-at-large, town clerk, trustee of the trust funds, two Derry Public Library trustees and two Taylor Library trustees.

Election day in Derry is March 12. Anyone wanting to file for office can contact the town clerk’s office at the municipal center.

Local writers

to gather

The first gathering for Writers’ Night Out is set for Jan. 7 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the new Cask and Vine, 1 East Broadway. The night gives local writers a chance to meet and mingle with others in their area.

The group will meet regularly. For information, contact Cynthia Neale at 329-4249.

Cask and Vine is a new business on Broadway offering food, wine and other special events.

Monster trucks

come to Derry

Advance Auto Parts at 10 Nashua Road hosts Crushstation, the lobster monster truck, on Jan. 3 from 2 to 6 p.m. The truck will help celebrate the upcoming performance of the Monster Jam at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Jan. 4 and 5.

Other monster trucks featured in that performance include Captain’s Curse, Thrasher, Black Stallion and Iron Warrior.

Visitors will have a chance to get autographs and photos.

Relay for Life

kicks off new year

The annual Relay for Life of Greater Derry and Londonderry is kicking off the new year. Anyone wanting to get involved is invited to attend a special “night at the movies” on Jan. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the O’Neil Cinemas in Londonderry. Learn how to start a team or be a leader.

The Relay for Life will be held June 21 at the Pinkerton Academy track. The overnight event is a major fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society. For information, call 471-4113.

Seniors, enjoy fun and games

The Marion Gerrish Community Center invites area seniors to take part in a new senior games group that will meet every Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. in the center’s Room 2A, beginning Jan. 8.

Games offered include Scrabble, Boggle, Yahtzee, Upwards and many more.

Come for friendship and fun. Coffee provided!
