---- — DERRY — A local author who loves the high tech world is now bringing those interests to e-book form.
Derry resident Mark Donovan announced the release of his debut novel, “Nano Surveillance,” a past-faced political thriller dealing with the world of high technology and surveillance.
Set in the northwestern part of the United States, the book’s main character, engineer and pilot Dave Henson, witnesses the economic collapse of the nation and takes his team on a quest to reverse the political and economic direction of the country, putting a nanotechnology surveillance company to the test.
Donovan has written 32 e-books and more than 2,000 articles on other subjects including home improvement tasks. His website, homeadditionplus.com, features these works. He is also a licensed pilot.
He said he grew up building homes and doing major remodeling projects. Once he had his own home, he kept the momentum going, building additions, finishing off basements and serving as the general contractor on his own lake home on Lake Winnipesaukee.
That project was featured on the DIY Network’s show “Be Your Own General Contractor: Vacation Homes” in 2005.
Donovan, a former member of the Derry School Board, said he’s always loved writing and it was time to write about something other than how to fix up your house.
“This past January, I decided to take a break from writing about home improvement topics for a while and instead write a novel,” he said. “It’s a political techno thriller.”
Donovan said it took him about four months to write the 382-page book.
Being a self-published author was not too difficult, he said.
“Today, anyone can publish e-books targeted for e-readers like Kindle, Nook and other tablets,” he said.
Getting books published through a major publishing company is a different story.
“That has become very difficult,” Donovan said. “It is nearly impossible for first-time authors to break in with a major company.”
“Nano Surveillance” gave Donovan a chance to write about something he loves, other than home improvement.
“I have spent nearly 30 years in high tech, where I have designed and developed computers, telecom equipment, semiconductors, and defense-related products,” he said. “Consequently, it was easy for me to write a book that featured a technical topic.”
Donovan spends about 20 hours a week writing and/or filming videos about home improvement projects. He enjoys the process and his new book gave him a different path for creativity.
“I have helped thousands of people with their home improvement questions,” he said. “Through my book, I hope to elevate the level of discussion on corporations and governments using surveillance technology on the unsuspecting public.”
“Nano Surveillance” is available in paperback and e-book formats.
