Pinkerton Math Center is a popular place

---- — DERRY — It’s all in the numbers at Pinkerton Academy’s math center.

The high school offers a spot for students to voluntarily come to brush up on their math skills and enjoy quiet time and tutoring help.

The center’s success is showing in the numbers.

Pinkerton math department head Lee Dailing said the new center, located in the freshman Academy Building, is often very busy.

In the past, math lab opportunities were only available to freshmen. Now, all students are welcome.

“This year, we requested to have it every period,” Dailing said.

More teachers are signing on to help in the math center. Student tutors also show up during open periods to help those who may be struggling.

In a few weeks, Dailing said upward of 400 students could visit the center.

They must sign in using their Pinkerton identification badges so all students are accounted for.

“We know where the kids are,” Dailing said.

Math is not an easy subject for many students, he said. Having the math center available gives those needing help an extra outlet for success as many don’t get the help at home. Others come to catch up after being absent with illness or other reasons.

Students are not forced to go to the center, it’s all voluntary.

Beginning Oct. 17, the math center will be open one night a week from 6 to 8 p.m., a perfect opportunity for students to get caught up, especially if they are busy with athletics and other extracurricular activities.

In addition to the math center, Dailey said, the school offers extra help during testing season. It’s a win/win situation in math for students needing the extra boost.

“The regulars just come and do their work,” he said. “It’s quiet, they ask questions and get moral support (from their peers).”

Pinkerton Academy's math center is a spot where students can stop by and get help from teacher and student tutors. A lot of students are stopping by the center to get caught up in math.
