Annual postal food drive is Saturday
The National Association of Letter Carriers hosts its 21st annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive on May 11. Letter carriers will pick up nonperishable donations of food as they deliver mail on that day.
All donations collected in Derry, Londonderry and Chester remain in those communities to support food pantries. Residents are asked to leave their food donations in a bag by their mailbox before the postal carrier arrives. For information call 434-7653.
Get rid of household hazardous waste
Derry hosts a household hazardous waste collection event on May 11 at West Running Brook Middle School on Route 28.
The event runs from 9 a.m. to noon. Residents with household hazardous materials such as pesticides or herbicides, oil-based paints, paint remover or thinner, solvents, degreasers, cleaners, pool chemicals, or old gasoline can drop them off at the school.

Book sale planned for May 11
The Friends of the Derry Libraries hosts a book sale on May 11 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the library on East Broadway.
Paperbacks are 50 cents, hardcovers are $1. All children’s books are 10 cents this month.
Proceeds support library programs and purchase museum passes available to library cardholders.
Library hosts Fairy Festival
Derry Public Library hosts a Fairy Festival on May 11 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the library on East Broadway.
Families are invited to stop by for an afternoon schedule of puppets, dancing, music, crafts, a costume contest and building fairy houses. Preregister by calling the library at 432-6140 or stop by the Children’s Room.
Hyla Brook poets begin
The 2013 Hyla Brook Reading Series begins on May 18 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Robert Frost Farm,122 Rockingham Road, Route 28.
Visting poets Jane Satterfield and Ned Balbo are joined by Hyla Brook poet Robin Small and will present samples of their works. Also beginning this month, the Hyla Brook Poets’ monthly writing workshop is held the third Saturday of the month at 10 a.m. throughout the summer at the Frost Farm.
