---- — Chester resident wins theme honor

Melissa Folini of Chester won top honors for her winning parade theme for this year’s Greater Derry/Londonderry Chamber of Commerce Holiday Parade set for Nov. 24.

Folini shared her winning theme idea, “Songs and Sounds of the Holidays,” after reading about the theme contest in the Derry News.

As theme winner, Folini will receive a gift basket filled with goodies provided by Chamber members.

This year’s parade steps off at 1 p.m. in downtown Derry. For information call 432-8205.

Caregivers host bake sale on Oct. 28

Community Caregivers of Greater Derry hosts a bake sale on Oct. 28 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Mack’s Apples in Londonderry.

Making a special appearance at the sale is Miss Greater Derry Kendall Wipff. The sale features homemade cakes, pies, cookies and much more.

Donations are welcome and can be dropped off at the Caregivers’ office on East Broadway on Oct. 27 from 1 to 4 p.m. Mack’s Apples is located at 230 Mammoth Road. Call for information at 432-0877.

Upper Room hosts gala event Nov. 2

The Upper Room hosts its annual Family Matters Auction and Dinner event on Nov. 2 at 6 p.m. at Promises to Keep in Derry.

The event, “Live From the Red Carpet,” includes a live and silent auction and more.

Bowling to fight cancer

A “Bowling for Breast Cancer Awareness” event is set for Nov. 2 at 6:30 p.m. at Lakeside Lanes in Manchester.

The event is hosted by Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage offices in Derry, part of an effort to raise money to support breast cancer research.

Driver safety course offered

AARP hosts a two-session driver safety course on Nov. 7 and 9 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Nutfield Medical Building, 44 Birch St.

Class includes information on defensive driving techniques, age-related safety issues including changes to vision, hearing and reaction time, as well as discussion on air bags and safety belts. There are no tests.

Some insurance companies offer discounts for completing the course. Classes are open to any driver, but is recommended for those over 50. The course fee is $14, $12 for AARP members. Call to register at 1-877-642-2362.

VFW hosts Halloween party

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1617 hosts a Halloween party for children on Oct. 27 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the VFW post, 18 Railroad Ave.

The party is open to all community children up through age 12.

Chili cook-off is Oct. 28

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1617, 18 Railroad Ave., hosts a chili cook-off event on Oct. 28 beginning at 2 p.m.

Members and their guests are welcome.

Scenic road hearing set

The Planning Board hosts a public hearing on Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. in the municipal building’s third-floor meeting room to discuss a proposal for trimming and removing trees on English Range Road by New England Electric Cooperative.
