Grinnell teacher named educator of month
DERRY — A well-loved school nurse received the Derry Education Association's (DEA) top honor this month.
Grinnell Elementary School nurse Lucie Collins was named the DEA's educator of the month for October. Collins was surprised by her peers and coworkers at a ceremony held on Oct. 27 at the school.
The DEA honors a top teacher at a different school each month.
Collins began work at Grinnell back in 1995 and has served the school as a nurse, tending to many areas where she is needed, from organizing flu clinics for staff, to helping children stay healthy in the classroom. And she, herself, has hardly ever had a sick day.
In a nomination letter, Grinnell physical education staffer Jake Filip said he met Collins the same year she joined the school staff and since then they have become strong friends and each other's biggest fan.
Filip noted a typical Lucie Collins day is filled with everything from tending to a child's medical concerns, to offering tours of the school to families, and planning education for students about health, medication, food allergies, or H1N1.
Collins also serves on Grinnell's building safety committee and helps plan a course of action in case of a real emergency where the school was in danger.
"I have only ever known one school nurse here at Grinnell School," Filip said. "I hope that I never have to get to know another one."
Filip joined with other staffers at Grinnell to congratulate Collins and presented her with flowers and a special medical cake, complete with a stethoscope, syringe, and other nurse-like decor.
"I couldn't do my job without you guys," Collins said. "We're a team and we have to work together."
Filip said Collins is an asset to the entire Grinnell community and is a valuable member of the school environment.
"She is such an asset to these families and is passionate about taking care of their children, both physically and emotionally," Filip said.
Next month, another Derry educator will be honored as teacher of the month.
