Massabesic in need of help
One of the most beautiful and natural locations in our area is in dire need of our support in many ways.
Have you ever just wanted to take a walk on a summer day along a pristine lake? Or maybe you'd like to scout out some favorite species of birds that happen to be fluttering in the neighborhood? Any of these things can make for a wonderful day of nature, calm, and the most wonderful form of entertainment.
Right near here in Auburn is the Massabesic Audubon Center, a great place for viewing nature, taking walks, and learning a lot about the environment and the creatures that call it home.
But in the past years, the Center has come upon some tough times and is in need of volunteer support in a big way to keep its programming and mission going strong.
This place is a well-loved and wisely used community treasure, visited by thousands of people, and valued for its environmental education programs, natural resources and landscape, as well as its role in water quality preservation for NH's largest city. Protection of this land is essential to maintain the viability of this vibrant component of the Massabesic Watershed.
Anyone wanting to learn more about this tremendous resource right in our area can attend a community meeting on Nov. 5 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Center, 26 Audubon Way in Auburn.
So many families and children attend the Center's wide range of programs and nature events, it would be a shame to see it's role in this area go by the wayside. Anyone wishing to learn more and get involved can attend this week's meeting and hopefully can make a difference somehow in the life of this wonderful resource.
Coming up at the Massabesic Audubon Center are a series of fun nature programs for families including the following:
"Birds of Prey" show, featuring a live bald eagle on Nov. 14 with two shows at noon and at 1 p.m. Cost is $8 for Audubon members/$10 for nonmembers and $20 for amilies/$30 for nonmember families. Get a close-up look at a bald eagle and other birds of prey, offered by presenter and licensed wildlife rehabiliator/biologist Tom Ricardi.
"Get Ready for Winter" a live animal presentation set for Nov. 28 at 1 p.m. Led by Massabesic volunteer coordinator Alison Dixon, the program deals with New Hampshire's wildlife and how they survive when winter arrives. The program includes a fun hike along the Audubon trails.
Also, support the New Hampshire Audubon and order your holiday wreath. Order by Nov. 7 with pick up Nov. 21. Purchase a naturally-decorated wreath from the Massabesic Center and help support the center's educational programs. Let the center's volunteers decorate your wreath with a red, gold, burgundy bow and other locally collected natural materials.
Different wreath sizes are available. Call for information about any Massabesic programs or to order a wreath at 668-2045.
