Kids really care in Derry

Grinnell's Kids Care Club helps local food pantry

DERRY — Students at one local elementary school are packing it in and delivering the goods when it comes to helping others.

Students involved in the Kids Care Club at Grinnell Elementary School collected nonperishable food and household items and delivered a big shipment of support to the First Baptist Church food pantry last week. The week was officially national Kids Care Week with the theme "Feed the Hungry."

About 70 Grinnell students walked from their school all the way to the food pantry on Crystal Avenue, carrying bags of food and other items they collected to donate.

When they arrived in the parking lot near the pantry, children gathered to hear about the food pantry mission, then gathered their items and went inside the building to deliver their food contributions.

Kids Care Club organizers Kyle Sachs told the children the space inside wasn't very big, and to enter in groups of 10.

"We're going to make it really full now," Sachs said.

She added the children participating in the Kids Care Club like to help others and are learning the importance of giving back through projects like the annual food drive.

Grinnell third-grader Cheyenne Reid, 8, sat patiently on the pavement with her younger brother, Stephen, 6. The siblings held tightly to their bags of food, waiting their turn to go inside the food pantry.

"I like to help people," Cheyenne announced. Stephen nodded in agreement.

The club is a program under the Points of Light and Hands Network, providing opportunities for elementary and middle school children to develop compassion and perform volunteer work in the community to help others.

Grinnell is part of a network of more than 1,800 Kids Care clubs nationwide. The Quaker company, the premier partner of Kids Care Clubs, provided funding for mini-grants to support the Kids Care Club efforts in Derry. Grinnell received a $300 grant to support their community work to support the local food pantry. Since 190, Kids Care Clubs has been developing compassion and inspiring a spirit of service in elementary and middle school children around the nation.

The annual food collection and delivery kicks off the Grinnell Kids Care Club season. Other schools in Derry also have Kids Care Clubs working hard to help the community and the world including Ernest P. Barka Elementary and West Running Brook MIddle School.
